Artist A J Spinks is a native of south Louisiana and has been drawing and painting for over 35 years. His art education started back in high school and continued through the Graphic Design and Fine Art B.A. program at Louisiana State University. His biggest influences were John James Audubon, and the time spent with family at "Propinquity"in St Francisville, LA owned by his great aunt and uncle Theodore H. and Mabel Martin (former sheriff of West Feliciana Parish, close friend of Gov Huey P Long, and great grandson of one of the original owners of Propinquity). Propinquity, One of St. Francisville's oldest brick buildings, Propinquity was built of some 200,000 bricks in 1809 as the store of John Mills with cellar underneath and dwelling house above. Lucy Audubon was carried on the account ledger during the years she taught plantation misses as a means of earning the money which allowed her husband John James Audubon to publish his Birds of America. The building was restored as a private residence in 1966. Located on Royal St.
Majority of mediums used are pen, pencil, and acrylic on reclaimed material from old Cypress to 120yr old New Orleans French Quarter area roof slate.
AJ also creates hand hewn bowls, and tables from 100 plus year old sunken Cypress known as Sinker Cypress dove for locally in Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas. The minerals in the sediment create gorgeous gold, purple, and brown tones found only in sunken old growth Cypress.
When not selling his art at Jackson Square in the French Quarter or at local festivals, AJ is very involved in the local Film and TV industry having acted in several films starting back in 1989. He has been featured in several episodes of HBO's Treme', and A&E's BREAKOUT KINGS.
Some of the films he acted in due out this year are Battleship, GI Joe - Retaliation, The Campaign, Parker, Headshot, Fire with Fire, Hot Flashes, and most recently, Broken City, Now You See Me, and National Geographic's 3D IMAX movie Hidden Worlds.
